Rayhana
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rayhana bint Amr ibn Khunafa was a Jewish woman from the Banu Qurayza tribe. Muhammad chose her as a concubine after her husband executed along with the other men of the Banu Qurayza were executed. According to Ibn Ishaq Muhammad offered her to become his wife if she accepted Islam, but she refused. Even though Rayhana is said to have later converted to Islam, she died as Muhammad's chattel.[1]
Ibn Sa'd writes and quotes Waqidi that Rayhana herself has said that she was manumitted and married by Muhammad.[2] According to Al-Halabi, Muhammad married and appointed mahr for her. It is further narrated that, upon marriage, she refused to take the hijab, causing a rift between her and Muhammad. The couple later reconciled. She died shortly after Muhammad's hajj and was buried in Jannat al-Baqi cemetery. [3][dubious — see talk page]
