Red Buttes Wilderness Area

The Red Buttes Wilderness Area contains the headwaters of the Illinois River.
Red Buttes Wilderness is situated in both Oregon and California; the greater portion in California. Red Buttes Wilderness (20,230 acres) includes the crest of the Siskiyou Mountains between the Rogue River and Klamath River drainages. The wilderness is 13 miles long and 6 miles wide, with elevations from about 2,800 feet above sea level to 6,740 feet. The wilderness declared
Red Buttes Wilderness was designated by Congress in 1984, according to the Wilderness Act Wilderness Act.

The wilderness area includes several hiking trails including:
- Azalea Lake Trail - A 13 mile round-trip
- Frog Pond Trail
- Cameron Meadows Trail
- Butte Fork Trail
[edit] Road Access
The best road (paved) access is from Oregon. From Ruch, Oregon, Oregon, go south on Upper Applegate Road to the end of Applegate Lake, turn left, and proceed to the Red Buttes Wilderness. A map can be acquired at Applegate Ranger Station, which is located on Upper Applegate Rd., south of Ruch.
