Talk:Red Dwarf characters

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Lister gave birth to the twins himself after a sexual liaison with his female alter-ego from a female-orientated alternate universe. Due to them being born in a different reality to their conception both of them grew to be eighteen years old within three days, so in order to make sure they didn't die within a fortnight Lister sent them back to their mother's dimension."

This is in the article, but I can't recall Lister giving birth. Rimmer tells him that he is pregnant at the end of the episode, and then the pregnancy is never mentioned again as far as I know. Can anyone clear this up?

-- At the End of Episode Future Echoes, which precedes the Parallel Universe, Lister takes a picture of himself with two babies. At this point the assumption is that they have a mother, but the bit you're describing confirms that, actually, he gave birth to them. Andymarczak 15:18, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

-- At the start of series 3 there are some paragraphs of scrolling text which explains that Lister gave birth to twin boys; Jim and Bexley and that they were returned to their mother in the alternate reality Pastbury 00:11, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

"At the beginning of series 3, we learn that Kryten smashed the bike into an asteroid. Lister rebuilt him, but was unable to recreate him exactly"

Also, I can not recall this ever being mentioned at the beginning of series 3! Any help?

These details are all mentioned - very quickly - at the beginning of series 3, in a Star Wars-like scrolling text thing that goes so fast that you need a video player with a good pause function to actually read it. --Paul A 08:19, 27 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Do we really need a spoiler warning for each section? Wouldn't just one warning at the start cover everything? --Daibhid C 17:27, 12 March 2005 (UTC)

I'm splitting the six major characters out of this page into pages of their own since their sections are all rather significant and the page is pretty long with it all in here. I can't find any discussion from when they were all merged together so I'm hoping this isn't a matter that's been hashed out in detail already. There's some useful guidelines over on Wikipedia:Fiction that I think apply here. Bryan 22:18, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Tony, I just re-reverted your reversion of my changes - it was easier than not doing it since we edit-conflicted while I was trimming down the sections of the six main characters I was splitting off. Sorry about that. However, I'm a little puzzled why you reverted me in the first place since you said in the edit summary "I think you could be right". Do you think the TOC and spoiler warning changes were a bad idea, or not? I'm not deeply wedded to one or the other, I'm mainly just confused at this point. Bryan 22:35, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I'll go through the redirects to make sure they're straightened out too once I'm sure the changes I made are accepted enough to be stable. Bryan 22:51, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Although Arnold J. Rimmer would like people to think he is a Bachelor of Science (BSc), he actually only holds a Bronze Swimming Certificate (BSC). The capitalisation is important in this case. The fact he cheated at even this lowly "award" and actually cannot swim is a testament to the depths this man will sink to (perhaps literally). -=# Amos E Wolfe #=- 21:31, Apr 10, 2005 (UTC)

  • I'm not sure he cheated. The only time he's called a non-swimmer is by Andy the twonk in Back To Reality, which was a hallucination designed to bring down their morale. Jess Cully 00:43, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Correct spelling of brufweno/brufwino? Also, with regards to Kochanski as Lister's ex-girlfriend vs. object of affection, which seems to have been recently changed, the Red Dwarf site states:
`and the rather bizarre fact that Lister is his own father (with his ex-girlfriend Kochanski emerging as his Mom)...`
Later episodes confirm this, although earlier episodes claim he never had the courage to ask her out. wht.rbt 13:53, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

-- What you are describing here is the joy of the Red Dwarf Continuity Debate. There are whole websites devoted to the lack of continuity in certain areas, including some which I have added on to the main article. My advice is either relate it to Continuity, or just let it go Andymarczak 15:18, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Alternate personalities

I've moved Queeg to the Alter egos section, as he wasn't really a shipboard robot, merely Holly in disguise. 17:27, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Captain Hollister

Is his first name ever given as Frank? Most sources I've seen just call him Captain Hollister and I don't remember him being referred to as Frank at any time in the series. One site even lists him as "Captain (Dennis?) Hollister" as that's the only first name we hear him given. Jess Cully 00:41, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Back in the Red Part 3
HOLLISTER Well, for me, Lister's nanobots story is corroborated. They were trying to track 'em down. Their actions in the psychotropically induced scenario bear that out.

HOLLY I agree Frank. I also believe we died, and were, indeed, resurrected.

Andymarczak 11:08, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

He also refers to himself as 'Captain F. Hollister' in that story. However, Hollister might not actually be his real name at all, as he was formerly known as 'Dennis the Doughnut Boy' (although that was a one-off gag and might not be canon). RobbieG 21:32, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Todhunter

The article says "Todhunter's job title is never explained, though he may be the first officer (executive officer) of Red Dwarf. He is in charge of the stasis booth and tries to describe how it works to anyone who goes there. He is also an exam invigilator." A later episode in series 3 explains that a woman called Carol Brown is the ship's executive officer. It is more likely that Todhunter is the ship's Chief Engineer. I say this for two reasons 1) He is seen in The End holding a clipboard containing the "Engineer's Report" and 2) as the article points out he is seen invigilating the Engineer's exam.
