Reinhard Scharnagl

Reinhard Scharnagl (born 1953) is author of a book about the future of the game of Chess, inventor of Capablanca Random Chess and the Chess960 Enumbering Scheme and developer of the chess variant program SMIRF.

Scharnagl is the author of the book Fischer-Random-Schach (FRC / Chess960) - Die revolutionäre Zukunft des Schachspiels (inkl. Computerschach), ISBN 3-8334-1322-0. Since 2001 he has been trying to advance and popularize Fischer Random Chess, today more commonly called Chess960, particularly in the area of programming. Scharnagl pioneered X-FEN, a necessary extension of the traditional Forsyth-Edwards Notation (FEN) that provides a downward compatible encoding of Chess960 positions. The worldwide standard Chess960 Enumbering Scheme of all 960 starting positions in Chess960 also originated with him.

Scharnagl is the inventor of Capablanca Random Chess (CRC), a variant basing on the 10x8 chessboard and Jose Raul Capablanca's extended piece set (additional pieces- the chancellor and the archbishop). He also has written the 8x8 and 10x8 multivariant chess program SMIRF.
