[edit] Classification
The family is contained in Brachycera infraorder Tabanomorpha. Atherix Meigen (and related genera) and Vermileo Macquart (and related genera) are now separated from Rhagionidae as Athericidae (Stuckenberg 1973) and Vermileonidae (Nagatomi 1977).See Tree of Life [2]
[edit] Biology
The larvae of rhagionids are predaceous, but it is almost certain that the adults are not. Adults of Spaniopsis, as well as some species of Symphoromyia Frauenfeld from North America and Central Asia, are blood feeders. The structure of the adult mouthparts in some genera and species in relation to blood feeding is discussed by Nagatomi & Soroida (1985).
