Ricky Rice began his career in professional wrestling in 1985 working for Eddie Sharkey's Pro Wrestling America. In 1988 he made his debut in the American Wrestling Association (AWA) as one half of the tag team the "Top Guns" with fellow wrestler John Paul. Paul was later replaced by Derrick Dukes as a member of the team. Rice and Dukes feuded with Badd Company over the AWA tag team titles during the later half of 1988, but broke up shortly after appearing at SuperClash III in a mixed 6-man tag team match.
Before leaving the AWA, Rice wrestled as the Unknown Soldier, a masked wrestler in military fatigues. He participated in the very first Team Challenge Series match, defeating Mike Enos. Rice would leave the promotion shortly thereafter and several wrestlers would go on to wrestle as the Unknown Soldier until the AWA folded. Rice then wrestled for Minnesota based Pro Wrestling America (PWA) and the independent circuit.
Rice often drew comparisons to former AWA star Jim Brunzell for being able to execute one of the best dropkicks in wrestling.
