Rio Grande, Minas Gerais
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Rio Grande is a river in eastern Brazil, a tributary of the Paraná River. The river originates in Minas Gerais state, and the lower portion of the river forms the boundary between the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo.
The Rio Grande has its headwaters in the Serra da Mantiqueira, which separates the watersheds of the Rio Grande and its tributaries to the north and the Paraíba do Sul River and its tributaries to the south. The Rio Grande runs northeast initially, then curves to the northwest to empty into the Furnas Reservoir, which was formed in 1962 by building a dam across the Rio Grande. The lower stretch of the river, which was dammed to form the Agua Vermelha Reservoir, forms the boundary between Minas Gerais and São Paulo states. The Rio Grande empties into the Ilha Solteira Reservoir on the Paraná River.
