Robert Ripley (Jim Carrey) embarks on a journey through many countries. Learning new things, finding new things and gathering many friends along the way. Later Ripley begins televising a special but later has many health problems to deal with.

- Oedekerk and Jim have a long collaborative history, beginning on In Living Color, and Oedekerk wrote and directed Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls and scripted Bruce Almighty.
- Ripley's Believe It or Not was allegedly postponed because of escalating costs and new ideas that necessitated a rewrite of the script. The newest re-write is said to be concentrating on the visual spectacle aspect, whilst still addressing the budget.
- This will be a first time collaboration for Carrey and Burton who is said to have specifically requested Jim Carrey for the part.
