The 7.62 RK 95 TP (RynnäkköKivääri 95 Taittoperä, Assault rifle 95, Folding stock) is an assault rifle that was produced by the Sako company based in Finland. A relatively small quantity was purchased by the Finnish Defence Forces. The weapon is a further development of the Rk 62 which was based on the Soviet AK-47 assault rifle. It fires the same 7.62 x 39 mm ammunition as the AK-47, but a few samples were made in 5.56 x 45 mm NATO. It is considered to be the best AK-47 variant in the world by many experts, due to the superior quality of materials and workmanship. A civilian semi-automatic version with a fixed buttstock was manufactured under the name Sako M92S.
The RK 95 TP features tritium sights for night-time use in addition to its 150 meters and 300 meters sights. These are very similar to those of M16 rifles used by the US Army. Sights are adjusted only by moving the front sight, the rear sight is solid.
The main differences between the RK 62 and the RK 95 TP are
- A new side folding butt stock (similar to the Galil rifle).
- A new muzzle flash suppressor which also functions as a muzzle brake.
- New handguards.
- An enlarged trigger guard to facilitate firing with thick gloves on.
- Better balance; more weight at the front of the rifle.
- Possibility to mount accessories, such as red dot sights, telescopic sights, bipods, tactical lights, night vision devices, grenade launchers and sound suppressors.
- The possibility of mounting bayonets with M16-type mounting.
- New sights that move both adjustments to the front sight which consequently eliminated the problem with the Rk 62 rear sight shifting when switching night sights carelessly.
The new flash suppressor, besides functioning as a muzzle brake, also allows the firing of rifle grenades. The grenades have an effective fragment radius of 10 to 20 m. These grenades have not been purchased in any significant quantities by the FDF. The RK 95 also uses a different blank firing adapter than the RK 62.
Another minor change from the RK 62 and other Kalashnikov-type rifles is a slightly modified safety / selector switch. A standard AK selector switch makes a relatively loud clacking noise when operated, potentially exposing the operator in situations which require stealth, such as ambushes. To remedy this, the operator can pull the RK 95 selector switch outward while using it, reducing the clacking noise considerably.
A three-piece cleaning rod can be stored in the buttstock. It can be screwed in and out of place using a magazine, among other things.
