[edit] Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and vote pages using three tildes, like this: ~~~. Four tildes (~~~~) produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! [edit] UCD

Thank you so much. I've heard and read similier things before, but never had the chance to talk to someone actually there, so its a huge help. Im a keen swimmer and have heard that there building a new pool off capaus for UCD, is this true and will it be several years before its built? The campus accomadation - did you use it? Is it hard to get for first years? I heard loads about the wireless internet... is it for real and is it for free? Is it a fairly safe campus... like if you left your bike tied up somewhere would the wheels disappear? Thanks a million. CGorman 21:56, 27 July 2005 (UTC)

Thanks again. Im fairly certain that i'll be putting UCD as my first preference with DCU my second (althought im going there on the tour later this year). I might ask you a few more questions again someday if I need to. Thanks a million. CGorman 18:25, 28 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Wikimedia UK/Wikimania 2006

Hi, this is a circular to Wikipedians in Ireland to draw your attention to Wikimedia UK, where the establishment of a local Wikimedia chapter for the United Kingdom (and possibly for the Republic of Ireland) is being discussed. See the talk page, as well as the mailing list; a meetup will take place to discuss matters in London in September, for anyone who can get there. On another topic, plans are being drawn up for a UK bid for Wikimania 2006, which would be conveniently close to Ireland. On the other hand, Dublin's bid was one of the final three last year - might we bid again? --Kwekubo 19:31, 31 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] The Killers

[1] The Killers first started playing together as a group at a gay / tansgenders club in Las Vegas. Why would we not include where they first started in their history? That seems idiotic. 71.32.199.15 00:56, 7 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Hasenpfeffer, Inc.

I read a great quip on the Internet recently:

  • A schlemiel spills his soup
  • A schlimazel gets soup spilled on him
  • A schmendrick looks at the soup spilled on him, scratches his head, and wonders what just happened
  • A schlump ignores the soup spilled on him, and just doesn't care

[edit] deletion vote

Don't worry, there's nothing wrong with changing your vote. People do it all the time. Having an open mind is a Good Thing (not sure that I have one, but I know I'm in favour of them in principle!) Palmiro | Talk 16:09, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Irish British people category

Hi I notice you added a couple of people to this, I would appreciate your vote to keep this category here Wikipedia:Categories_for_deletion#Category:Irish_British_people_to_Category:Irish-British_people drop a line to anyone who can help keep it if you have time. Thanks Arniep 11:16, 21 October 2005 (UTC)

Hi Ryan. Thanks for your note, at the moment it seems to be a bit of a losing battle but I have proposed renaming the category to Category:Irish diaspora in Great Britain, Irish diaspora is a pretty much accepted phrase and doesn't place an indication of citizensip which the other name gave. Cheers Arniep 10:42, 22 October 2005 (UTC)
Thanks for your vote, I realised that one of the proposed renames Britons of Irish descent was no good as it would probably cover anyone in Northern Ireland and my intention for the category was for people of note in Great Britain only. Cheers Arniep 17:36, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Popups

I saw your post on Lupin's talk page regarding popups. You mentioned that you're using Safari in OS X (like me), and that it took a while for the popups to start working. I'm having the same problem. How long did it take before they started working? Cnwb 13:12, 26 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Irish British eureka moment

Hi Ryan I think I've finally worked out the best solution to resolve the disagreement on this category. We should split this category into Category:People of Irish descent in Great Britain, and Category:Irish people in Great Britain for people who live in Great Britain who call(ed) themselves Irish (whether they were born or grew up in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Irelandor born to ex pats abroad who now live in Great Britain). I would appreciate if you could support the new proposal at Wikipedia:Categories_for_deletion#Category:Irish_British_people_to_Category:Irish-British_people__Category:Britons_of_Irish_descent_Category:Irish_diaspora_in_Great_Britain. Thanks Arniep 14:03, 30 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Elvis Presley

I recquire some assistance in the Elvis Presley article. Two NPOV-unfriendly users ( Ted Wilkes and Hoary ) keep deleting the mentioning of Elvis dying on the toilet. Since you've edited the "toilet-injury" article, I just wanted to enquire whether you might assist me in my struggle against them :-) (129.241.134.241 15:16, 31 October 2005 (UTC))

Yeah, I agree with your argument, and will keep my eye on the Elvis talk page until there's a resolution on it. RMoloney (talk) 19:48, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Edit War

I need some assistance, man! Ted Wilkes ( at Elvis Presley ) is squeezing my balls with his constant, never-ending reverts. As you know, I can't revert more than 3 times a day, so I need your help ( it's for a noble cause! ) (129.241.134.241 19:05, 3 November 2005 (UTC))

Thanks! Thanks to your efforts, Wilkes has violated 3rr and will probably be banned for 1 day (129.241.134.241 22:13, 3 November 2005 (UTC))

Just a note, roping people in to exceed the 3RR rule is not a good idea. Rich Farmbrough 12:22, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Jewish American actors

Hi Ryan, I noticed your vote on this. I just wondered whether you realised that this category contains many people in it have only one parent (or even grandparent in some cases) who was jewish, do not identify themselves as Jewish American and are in other (ethnicity)-American categories. I think it needs to be deleted because it doesn't make sense that a person who does not identify as wholly jewish could be described as a jewish american actor such as Carrie Fisher, Patricia Arquette, Robert Downey Jr., Michael Douglas. Arniep 00:25, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your message + the revert. Sorry about the name Ryan Moloney is an actor from Neighbours so I obviously watched that a bit too much! Re: the jewish actor category, I know a particular user has been adding people with at least one grandparent of jewish ethnicity to the jewish-american category and these have been being transferred to jewish american actors which imo doesn't really work for a lot of people in the category whose father was jewish so they are nt even jewish in the religious sense. If the category is going to stay I think only people religiously jewish can be included in it, and maybe when I nominate Irish British people for a rename to People in Great Britain of Irish descent I'll nom all the xxx-American categories to People in the United States of xxx descent. Arniep 01:37, 6 November 2005 (UTC)
Hi I realise that some people with jewish fathers might regard themselves as jewish but I don't think anyone should be in the category (if it should even exist) unless we are 100% sure they call themselves jewish-american i.e. Leonard Nimoy. I just think merging ethnicity with actor or any other profession just creates a huge can of worms as many people are in multiple ethnicity categories so people could end up being in four different xxx-American actor categories. Arniep 02:32, 6 November 2005 (UTC)
Hi, I think the main problem is the xxx-American categories need sorting out. xxx-American is really an identifier, something someone would use to describe themselves, usually they wouldn't describe themselves as more than one xxx-American, i.e, Robert De Niro probably considers himself Italian American not Irish or German American even though he has one German and Irish grandparent. Usually the identifier is often tied to the paternal line, i.e.Tyrone Power probably called himself Irish American because both his names were from Ireland even though only his great grandfather was Irish. So I think maybe it needs to be considered creating new categories Americans of xxx descent or People in the United States of xxx descent for people who do not identify as xxx-American. Arniep 11:50, 6 November 2005 (UTC)
Hi, I'm not sure what you were agreeing to on my talk page. Anyway I think people are misunderstanding what I am arguing about, I am not against the jewish american actor category per se, I just think some people should not be in the category if they don't identify as jewish because they are of other ethnicities as well as jewish, they have converted to another religion, whatever reason. In those cases I think they should be moved to Americans with Jewish ancestry or Americans of Jewish descent or a similar category. Arniep 14:44, 7 November 2005 (UTC)
Hi, various people have made points on the cfd page, the main point being that nationality and ethnicity should't be mixed with profession otherwise someone who has four grandparents of different ethnicities and two professions could end up in 8 xxx american xxx categories which would be stupid. Arniep 17:00, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

I believe he was agreeing with my point - i.e. that we should use the 1/4 rule for every ethnic group and obviously forget about any religious rules because they are POV and don't apply to Irish-Americans, etc. Vulturell 00:35, 8 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Elvis Presley

It is a real problem that Ted Wilkes is repeatedly deleting contributions written by others which are not in line with his personal view. This is not O.K. See also [[2]]. Have you an idea what the other users can do? Onefortyone 13:58, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

Onefortyone, I think the only thing we can do is persevere, and try to build a consensus. If we can find a formulation which is acceptable to most editors, TW will eventually give up his revert warring, and maybe even engage with other editors in building consensus for articles. [edit] Irishmen

I changed it to "Irish people" - but just to let you know - "Irishmen" is not a gender bias. It is about as gender bias as the book "the origin of man" It is a commonly used though old ethnic group name for Irish people - much like Englishmen. To give you an example "caveman" does not just mean men in caves. Antidote 05:44, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Hi There

You are sometimes very arrogant and have very strong opinion about things you don't completely know.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 192.250.34.162 (talkcontribs) 29 Dec 2005.

Well, my new year's resolution is to be nicer, and less of a dick, so hopefully I won't seem as arrogant in the future. I don't claim to know very much, and I do have strong opinions, but I will always acknowledge a mistake if pointed out to me. However, if this is about your edit to Seinfeld [3], I should point out that George has also pretended to be a marine biologist, and once pretended to be Donald O'Brien.

[edit] Irish cats

Hi, Category:Irish people in Great Britain and Category: Northern Ireland people in Great Britain have been nominated for deletion at Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2005 December 27. I created the cats for people who although born or brought up on the island have spent the majority of their lives living and working in GB. I've realised that cats and lists on Wikip are pretty much a total minefield so I'm steering well clear of the buggers from now on. Arniep 17:55, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
