Robert Gould Shaw III- (1898-1970) The only son of Nancy Langhorne (later Nancy Astor) and her first husband Robert Gould Shaw II, who was a cousin of Robert Gould Shaw of Fort Wagner fame. That is to say, Robert Gould Shaw II, Robert Gould Shaw III's father, was a cousin to Robert Gould Shaw of Fort Wagner fame.
His life tended to be troubled. His birth father had a limited role in his life at best. He briefly served in the British military but his increasing alcoholism caused difficulty. In 1931 he briefly gained notoriety by being sentenced to jail on Britain's sodomy laws. This merited some attention due to his status of being Nancy Astor's son. He had long had suicidal tendencies and his life mostly went adrift from an early point. His alcoholism, the Profumo Affair, his mother's death, and the death of his half-brother William Waldorf Astor, 3rd Viscount Astor may have increased his suicidal tendencies. In 1970 he committed suicide.
