[edit] Death of Speedball

I guess I'm willing to concede that with the information we have now, by my standards, it would be more direct to consider Speedball dead. But from the way the tv pundit is speaking, it's not so much of a verification of Speedball being dead as it is using him as an example since the New Warriors (in CW 1) are all presumed dead. However, we know one of them remains living, it could still be Speedball; there are also a lot of rumours pointing to him being alive, but I'm not going to go into them unless that's proved in the affirmitive. -Tim Rhymeless (Er...let's shimmy) 03:35, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

I'm more in favor of waiting for the end of the Civil War series before making any such decision. I'd need to see Reed Richards or Tony Stark actually say "Well, Speedball apparently tried to absorb the energy, but it was too much for him" and even then, well, I'd have my doubts. Kind of funny that X-factor this week had a character in denial about her own father's death, though. Mister.Manticore 05:45, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
I've got the feeling we're going to know pretty soon. As far as I can figure out, the only character who *must* die from this is Namorita, due to her proximity to the blast, but also, to secure the involvement of Namor. -Tim Rhymeless (Er...let's shimmy) 08:54, 25 May 2006 (UTC)
Well, know we know. I have updated the page to reflect Civil War: Front Line #1. --Chancemichaels 20:21, 7 June 2006 (UTC)Chancemichaels

[edit] Bibliography

Don't give a shit whether or not anyone wants this here but still for those who actually like Speedball or end up wanting back issues of him... here y'all go.

Um...I never had anything against the character and after seeing how Frontline #2 ended I feel extremely sorry for the guy. It's stuff like that which makes me wonder whether heroes like Spider-Man would reconsider sending criminals to prison (as opposed to killing them) if they were aware of the conditions inside prisons and how, for many people, it's worse than death. Thinking about what those guys might do to Baldwin makes me feel sick. The only reason I didn't pick up the other six available issues of the series was because I decided to save my money until next week, and I'll be picking up issue #3 with dread.--Fingerknöchelkopf 22:12, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
It helps to think of these stories as fiction. --Chris Griswold () 11:12, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ultimate Speedball

The "Other Versions" part of the article claims that Speedball made his debut in a cameo in Ultimate Spider-Man annual #2. This is not the case, it is merely a man dressed up in one of Speedball's costumes from the regular Marvel Universe in police custody saying "Not like this! Not like this!". This is the same as issue #81, which was released around the time of the House of M event, where a woman is dressed in Scarlet Witch's 616 costume, repeating "I'm not crazy!". It's merely Bendis referencing Marvel's big event at the time. -- —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 86.29.29.195 (talkcontribs).

[edit] SHB image

Per WP:CMC/EG, SHB should be of most recognizable incarnation of the character. Robbie Baldwin is best known as Speedball, and not this new name and costume he has taken. --Chris Griswold () 10:50, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Um to quote what i saw about the Superhero Box

"4. If the character has a clearly-defined primary costume (e.g. Superman), a picture of this should be used. Otherwise, the most recent ongoing costume of the character should be used."

Now i have seen speedball in different costumes, granted it is not as big of a change as Superman going to the electric blue uniform(i think that is what happened, it has been awhile) but it has still changed so wouldn't that mean that we use the most recent ongoing costume of the character .Phoenix741 19:13, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

That was supposed to be removed when the guideline was corrected previously to clearly say that we are to use the most recognizable image of the character. Robbie Baldwin is best known as Speedball and has been depicted this way for 20 years. --Chris Griswold () 13:02, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
Is he, however? I would argue that his current "Penance" guise (if it is indeed him, what I find weird somehow) is more recognizable at the moment than the Speedball version; after all, Speedball did not have a lot of appearances in the last few years, while Penance is something of a hot topic right now. While I find the Penance idea incredibly contrived and misconceived, it is still very visible now. Luis Dantas 13:13, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

To argue that Robbie Baldwin is more recognizable is better recognized as Penance is laughable. Half of those who pick up T-Bolts #110 prolly don't know his true identity. As for Speedball "not have a lot of appearances in the last few years" let's not forget he starred in his own series, three subsequent Warriors series, and has had guest spots out the wazoo. I am excited he is finally growing as a character, and that Quesada didn't kill him, even if Norman Osborn may. User: Oshaberi

[edit] Cleanup

This article needs cleanup. Currently, it appears as if editors are just adding to the end of it without trying to make the whole thing work. The publication history covers ten issues of comics. --Chris Griswold () 11:09, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

I started cleaning and editing this article. I'll try to add more and source a lot of it once I can track some more info down.Jvbishop 16:06, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Article move

I think in light of the events in Civil War Fronlint #10, the page should be renamed to penance, because everyone is going to be wondering what penance's background is. i don't think the speedball identity is ever going to be seen again, but there are people going to be wondering who robbie was before penance. i didint really like the charchter of speedball, but penance is awsome! marvel will probably make penance the permanent charachter. i guess keeping the article name as robert baldwin would be ok. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Chotterap (talkcontribs) 17:09, 13 January 2007 (UTC).

I think we are going to keep it as Robert baldwin, if you type in speedball or penance it will link back to this, so i really see no problem.Phoenix741 20:44, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Seconded. Shouldn't be a problem, as redirects are in place. --Mrph 23:38, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

fair enough. should the pic be updated? i was wondering because on the marvel universe, it is penance, not "robbie baldwin" or "speedball" that have an article. and the pic is also of penance. i think we should update that, and the powers and publication dates for the two identities.
