Auburn High School is a public high school located in Rockford, Illinois, USA. In addition to serving the west side of Rockford for grades 9-12, it also houses the high school portions of the Gifted Program (Academy), the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) Program, and the only Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program left in Rockford.
Around 1970 a football stadium was built next to Auburn High school. Large for a high school, the stadium was dubbed Westburn, because it was intended for use by not only Auburn, but by West High school as well [West High school has since been closed and reopened as a middle school]. Currently it shares the field with nearby Jefferson High School, as Jefferson has no home field of its own.
Auburn is located diagonally acorss from McIntosh Elementary school and next to the former Wilson Junior High school. A recent schoolboard decision will combine the Auburn and Wilson campuses into "North Campus" and "South Campus," with the freshmen housed at Wilson and the rest of the student body remaining at Auburn. On the north side of Auburn, acorss the street, is a small airport called Cottonwood, which uses a grass strip for a landing field. The general environs were for many years considered to be the far west reaches of Rockford, and generally at the beginning of rural farm land. Though there have been recent housing developments in the area, farm land still dominates immediately to the west of Auburn.
