Rockin' Kats
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rockin' Kats (known in Japan as NY Nyankies) is the title of a NES video game published in 1991 by Atlus Software Inc. The side-scrolling game involves the adventures of a cartoon cat in his quest to defeat a criminal gang that has taken over the city.
[edit] Storyline
In the single-player game you control "Willy" the rising young jazz cat in New York City who goes by the stage name of "The Rockin' Kat." However, the local crime boss, Mugsy, kidnaps Willy's girlfriend, "Jill". To rescue his girlfriend and defeat the gangster, Willy must venture through seven different levels or "channels" (from a television set) that feature various themes, thugs and bosses.
Willy is armed with a punch gun, that he can launch at the various thugs in the game, or to hook onto and swing from in a manner similar to Bionic Commando. Willy can also use the punch gun to grab and throw certain objects. Mastering the punch gun is critical to success in the game.
Despite the cartoon graphics, the game is difficult to complete, and after you lose your all your extra lives, you have the option to continue (restart) or write down a long set of symbols and letters as a password feature.
You can chose the order that you tackle the channels, and if you have enough money you can play a series of mini-games as well.
During each stage you need to be on the lookout for various items:
-Money bags you can use to buy more powerful punch gloves
-Hearts to restore your energy meter
-1-up icons shaped liked Willy's face
[edit] Trivia
- After you defeat all the channels, the final boss and the credits roll you are given a secret password to the real final level.
- The Japanese version featured different signs from its US counterpart. For example, in Channel 1, "CoCo Cola" was changed to "Atlus Soda" and "Root Beer" would replace "NY Beer" as per Nintendo's stringent censorship policies in that era.
