Rolando Tinio

Rolando Santos Tinio was a Filipino male poet, dramatist, director, actor, critic, essayist and educator.

Rolando Tinio was born in Tondo, and was always, according to his relatives, fond of organizing and directing his playmates for costumed celebrations. He was also into Filipino movies, and was happy to finally act with the stars he admired as a child as soon as he started working as a film actor and scriptwriter. He was religious, well-behaved, and truly gifted -- as shown by the fact that he graduated a magna cum laude with a degree in Philosophy from the University of Santo Tomas at age 18.

He was a poet, dramatist, director, actor, set and costume designer, critic, essayist, and educator. He published four seminal books of poems between 1972 and 1993, in which, along with his longtime friend Bienvenido Lumbera, helped modernize the traditionally sentimental Filipino style. Meanwhile, he had also worked on his Ateneo Experimental Theater productions and serious dramas in Filipino. Needless to say, his contribution to Philippine literature and theater is immense -- and, in all of these, Tinio was always known for his trademark for using "four-letter words."

Rolando Santos Tinio died of a heart attack after midnight on July 8, 2002. He is survived by his two children, Antonio and Victoria.

He was known for translating Western classics, which includes the works of Sophocles, Shakespeare, Ibsen, Chekhov, Puccini and Verdi, into Tagalog. He did these translations in order to advance the Filipino language. He was a prolific poet and writer who helped establish the Filipino-language drama in the 1970s. He was directing a musical when he died in Manila in 1997 at age 60.
