Romiley is a small district in the English town of Stockport. It was originally an agricultural area, until the late Victorian era, when it became a residential area, with a small district centre. It borders Marple and Bredbury, and is seen as a cross between the two. In Roman times there is thought to have been a settlement along Sandy Lane. There are two main schools, Romiley Primary School, and Greave School, both Primary Schools.
It is served by Romiley railway station on the Hope Valley Line from Sheffield to Manchester.
The surrounds are quite country like, although it is a suburb. There are fields to the top (north) and Compstall, an area near Romiley is home to the biggest country park in Stockport (Etherow).
The councillors for Romiley are:
- Hazel Lees (Lib Dem)
- Margaret McLay (Lib Dem)
- Syd Lloyd (Conservative)
Syd Lloyd recently took over from Brendon Jones - Liberal Democrat - with a majority of 412 votes, in the 2006 Local Elections. This is thought to be a small fluke result, based on a controversial plan regarding closing an old school which the Conservative candidate has taken advantage of. Turnout in this election was also low. It is doubted that the Conservatives will win the 2007 election as Margaret McLay has large popular local support.
[edit] Conservation Area
The West part of Romiley was recently made a Conservation Area which helps reduce traffic, preserve wildlife and important landscapes, and restricts making changes which affect the look of the area such as: Changing front doors, roofing/facade or windows.
