I am surprised that my hometown is on Wikipedia!
I must admit I'm not an expert on our local history and economy, but... flour milling? There's oodles of wheat grown and collected each harvest, sure. But the only "mills" I know of in Roma are timber and feed for livestock related. To be honest, I had no idea there was a flour mill... I thought it all got carted off elsewhere for processing.
Apart from wheat one could also mention that Roma is also home to Australia's largest cattle saleyards, which processed 380,000 head this year [1].
Then there's the "tourism industry" which supplements just about any ruraly town, the biggest attraction in the town of Roma itself would be "The Big Rig" [2].
Overall I'm pretty sure the main industries are beef, grain, wool and timber (hardwood/cyprus pine).
Also there's billions of dollars being spent by Origin Energy at a property called "Spring Gully", but it's about 80km away from Roma itself... it's mostly coal seam gas [3] and a 500MW power station [4] (to be powered by the gas).
The "Bungle Shire Council" is the name of the "Local Government Area" that contains Roma. [5] For more information about the Maranoa district in general, there's the venerable Maranoa Online website sponsored by local business in the area [6].
It is also the local centre of the ever present redneck trash culture in Queensland. The main past times enjoyed by the town's population are drinking and fighting. Prime examples of these activities can be witnessed on any Friday night at the various public bars and, after closing time, at Kookas, the 24 hour service station in the CBD.

How exactly is Roma a "centre" for "redneck trash culture"? What makes Roma so unique in this regard when compared to other western Queensland towns, such as Dalby, Surat, St George, Injune, Charleville, Quilpie, etc? Besides that, youth binge-drinking is a large problem in _all_ cities in Australia, not just the regional ones. Though I must admit I've seen some amusing shenanigans happening as the Greyhound bus pulls in at 1:15am on Friday nights at Kooka's, your comment is still hyperbole. 59.167.221.55 05:41, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
Sorry, I was unaware that people between 35 and 60 years of age are members of the "youth" category...
-- I'm still waiting to hear what life experience you have to compare Roma with in order to justify the statement that Roma is a "centre for redneck trash culture". As for the claim that it's the 35-60 age bracket making up the majority of those engaging in excessive alcohol consumption, the same can be said of most drinking places. Try the early hours of a morning at the Treasury Casino in Brisbane, who do you see there? And what age group is at the pubs in Brisbane on pension day from opening time so they can spend it all on Keno? Roma isn't exactly a centre for sophisticated culture, but it isn't doing too badly either. It's a hell of a lot better than most other regional/rural townships, especially given the extremely low unemployment rate (I saw in the headlines a few months ago it was under 2% !) 58.171.111.62 07:46, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
-- Actually, I've been thinking about this. Whilst I've got a few mates who've been in fights at clubs/pubs in Roma, I actually haven't heard anyone over 35 being in a fight, that's for sure. And unlike Brisbane, where I've got mates who've been bashed unconscious by complete strangers, the difference in Roma is that the encounters I've heard of have _all_ been between people who know each other and it's usually over something that happened many weeks/months before (small town, etc). In other words, it's personal. And yes, I happen to know a few nutcases who actually enjoy stirring people up and "sparring" at the best of times, add copious amounts of alcohol and things can get messy... but you hardly see 6-7,000 people at Kooka's on a Friday night now do you? Let's be realistic here: if that's all there really was to do in this town you'd see more than half a dozen stragglers staggering up for chips and wedges at 1am. 58.171.72.85 08:00, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
