Rudolph Mbela Douala (born September 25, 1978 in Douala), also known as Douala, is a Cameroonian footballer currently playing for Portsmouth on loan from Sporting.
He is an international midfielder/forward player and is known for being very fast. Douala started his career in St. Etienne but became more famous in Portugal, playing for Boavista FC, União de Leiria and then at Sporting.
Douala is on loan with Harry Redknapp's Portsmouth, with a view to a permanent signing. His transfer was unveiled on the last day of the summer transfer window, with Andy Cole and Niko Kranjcar also joining for a combined total of £4 million. It originally seemed unlikely, however, that Redknapp would exercise his option to purchase the player, having had only minor substitute appearances in the first half of the season. Beginning in January of 2007, however, Douala has taken up a greater role in the Portsmouth team, breaking into the starting line-up against Wigan Athletic and having a greater amount of substitute appearances.[2]
Speculation during the past transfer window had linked Douala with a move away from the club, with the player reportedly frustrated at his lack of first team oppurtunities at Fratton Park. A move never materialized, however, and Douala has recently revealed that "on the last day of the transfer window two clubs were calling me all day, but I said 'I want to stay.'" He has attributed this desire to remain at the club to the increased role he has recently been playing in the first team.
He made his Premier League debut during an away match to Newcastle United, as a second-half substitute.
