RTP2 (formerly 2: or a dois:) is a Portuguese Television broadcasting service of the RTP network. Commonly referred as the "Second Channel", this historically state-run broadcast service started its regular and independent broadcasting in 1978 (the first test broadcasts were made in 1968, from May to September, and the channel retransmited RTP´s broadcast until 1976) as an alternative to the mainstream broadcasting service of RTP. RTP2 is presently the only of several Portuguese national/international channels that has a strict cultural and educational programme. In early 2003(?), a policy was introduced by the State as to create a public advertising-free television service. RTP2 is the only broadcaster from Portugal that presently plays programmes without interruption, intervals or inline messaging. The RTP2 broadcasting programme is dedicated to world-wide recognized quality television content, institutional EU/National programmes or advertising, cinematography, documentary films, theatre and classical music. This channel has a 5%-7% share of the national audience (2005).
