In chess, C77 and C78 are the ECO codes for the Ruy Lopez, Morphy Defense chess opening. The game begins 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6. Paul Morphy popularized this move and today it is played in 75% of the Ruy Lopez's. In the ECO C77 variations, you find the continuations d3, Nc3, Bxc6, Qe2 or d4. The majority of games continue with O-O, the ECO C78 variation, known as Ruy Lopez, 5.O-O.
