Market Street, San Francisco, from postcard, 1st decade of 20th century. At the near left, the Flood Building at Powell Street. One of San Francisco's most famous department stores, the Emporium is to the right. While that store failed in the late 20th century the site is now being remodeled for new tenants.
Later, four tracks of streetcars from two competing companies would run this street, the Market Street Railway and the Municipal Railway. These were consolidated shortly after World War II. The street surface now accommodates historic streetcars on two tracks, electric trolly busses, and automobiles. Underneath the street is a subway for Municipal Railway (now "Muni") streetcars and below that underground tracks for BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). Sidewalks are now wider and surfaced with brick. Light standards are still the later triple luminare cast iron standards with relief sculptures of the gold rush.
The building containing the viewpoint no longer exists as it was removed to create space for Hallidie Plaza (named after Andrew_Smith_Hallidie, an open space pit entrance to the Powell Street BART/Muni station.
