Salem Monthly is the only alternative monthly newspaper in Salem, Oregon, United States. The newspaper is owned and managed by A.P. Walther and had operated out of The Coffee House Café on Liberty street of Salem, a business that was also owned and managed by Mr. Walther until he sold the café in order to concentrate on the newspaper. The idea behind the newspaper is to give a voice to the local alternative and liberal community, which believes it is unrepresented by the other local papers.[citation needed]
Topics covered in recent issues include: the stigma of living on welfare; the dangers of pollution and whether recycling helps; Chemeketa Community College’s financial struggles; local gay citizens’ reactions to the nullification of gay marriages that took place in Multnomah County; local residents’ experiences of racism; Japanese, Italian, and German internment during World War II; the Native American perspective on Thanksgiving; Bush’s abuses of power; Noam Chomsky and the Iraq war.
[edit] Publisher's mission statement
In the article entitled Why the Salem Monthly?[1], editor and publisher A.P. Walther writes:
We have created Salem Monthly to give our community exposure to local news, thought, and culture in the greater Salem area. We want to feature stories about what's going on in your area, to give you a sense of place. Salem is nestled in the beautiful Willamette Valley, a stone's throw away from towering mountains and a roaring ocean. We have many great cities and towns as our neighbors, and we are excited to bring you quality information from those communities. By covering much of the mid-Willamette Valley, Salem Monthly wants to be your guide to what's going on at home. We are including listings of events spanning many categories in order to give you more options and ideas on how to get involved in your community. Our goal is to spread as much information as we can about Salem and the surrounding towns.
