Sam Gagner (born August 10, 1989 in Minneapolis, Minnesota but raised in Oakville, Ontario) is an ice hockey player for the London Knights of the OHL. He is the son of former NHL'er Dave Gagner, who spent 15 seasons with Minnesota, Dallas, Calgary, Toronto, Florida, and Vancouver.
[edit] Playing career
Gagner, a centerman, tallied over 180 points at the midget level for the Toronto Marlies in 2004-05. In 2005-06, Gagner played for the Sioux City Musketeers of the USHL, finishing second on the team in points.
Gagner verbally committed to play hockey at the collegiate level for the University of Wisconsin, but decided to play closer to home and play major junior hockey in Canada. Considered a first round talent, London took him in the 4th round of the 2005-06 OHL entry draft on a flyer, as his commitment to play college hockey had scared many OHL teams from drafting him.
Gagner's OHL career has started off with a bang, as he has been a leading scorer for the Knights, and he is also one of the top scorers in the league. He is considered to be a possible top-10 pick for the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
Gagner was a part of the Gold Medal-winning Team Canada for the 2007 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships that place in Sweden. He wore #38 (instead of his typical #89) and was the youngest member of the team.
Gagner captained Team Burns/Bergeron (Red), in the 2007 CHL Top Prospects Game in a 5-3 victory over Team Bowman/Demers (White).
At the end of the 2006/07 season, Sam finished with 118 points for 5th in the OHL scoring race. He also combined with his line of Pat Kane and Sergei Kostitsyn for 394 points.
