Samuel Bayer
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Samuel Bayer (born in 1962 in Syracuse, New York) is an American music video director. His most famous works to date are the ones with the bands Nirvana and Green Day. With Nirvana he directed the video for the legendary Smells Like Teen Spirit, and he directed all the videos from Green Day's 2004 album American Idiot.
A graduate of New York City’s School of Visual Arts in 1987 with a degree in Fine Arts, he moved to Los Angeles in 1991 and became a popular director during the alternative rock era and was noted for producing aesthetically raw videos, often marked with scratches and burns on the film. Bayer claims that the reason he was chosen to direct "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was because his test reel was so bad.[1]
Bayer is also an acclaimed commercial director, directing for companies such as Coca-Cola, Toyota and Nike (a spot for which he won an AICP award for best direction in 1997).
In addition to directing videos, he directed Green Day's concert film, Bullet in a Bible.
In 2006, Bayer directed a series of commercials that launched a new advertising campaign for the United States Army which featured the slogan "Army Strong."
