The San Diego Jewish Academy (SDJA) was founded in 1980 in San Carlos, in San Diego. It now has about 750-800 students and has a large custom designed campus in Carmel Valley.
SDJA first started when in San Diego, a group of motivated Jews with a love for education, began renting a synagogue called Tifereth Israel. It was for K-9th grade. Then, the campus moved to another rented synagogue called Beth El. Over the years, the school grew in numbers, until it got to the point where the only logical solution was to build a new campus. Thanks to about 45 million dollars donated by several patrons, this dream became a reality.
In 1999 the San Diego Jewish Academy began a high school, making SDJA a K-12 school. The first high school class graduated in 2003.
In 2001, the 40 acre campus was complete and students began attending classes. In the summer of 2005, a field project went underway. The purpose of this project was to raise the field and make it level to the school as well as expand the playing surface to a 14 acre complex. It was completed in February 2006. Plans for a gym are in the making.
The school also features noted acting teacher Cara Freedman, who conducts the yearly theatrical performances by the school's Academy on Stage (AOS). Plans for a future performing arts center to accompany the gym are also underway. In this gym they are also making a music room. The music teacher at the SDJA is Tommy Collins. Recently, (end of February) the gym construction has begun.
