Sandnes is a city in the county of Rogaland, Norway. The population in the area gained a royal trade permission in 1664, leading to a major growth in industry, mainly related to pottery. Although this industry has now been closed for decades, Sandnes continues to grow, and are amongst the ten largest cities in Norway.

Although evidence of humans living in the area can be traced back 6000-7000 years, Sandnes hasn't really had any population or industry except for the last few centuries. As it lies close to Stavanger, traditionally a major trading and population center in this region of Norway, the population have been located there rather than in the area around Sandnes. At the middle of the 17th century, this started to change as more and more families established themselves in the area.[1] The people who had lived there until then, mostly relied on farming and fishing, with very little or no industry to speak of. Written sources estimates the population in the area to be about a dozen families or so around the shore of Gandsfjorden, a fjord stretching from Stavanger to Sandnes. The population grew steadily for the next hundred years, with some small scale pottery industry being established. The i industry showed that the clay (blåleire) was not only easily available, but also of a quality that made it very suitable for producing tiles, bricks and pottery. This led to Sandnes being conferred the status of Ladested in 1860, basically giving the inhabitants the right to start with domestic and international trade, providing they were approved by the magistrate in the trading center the village was placed under.
as Sandnes offered huge amounts of clay, with the added advantage of being close to another major trading center. This helped to boost the population, and in only a few years Sandnes became the location of a major part of the Norwegian pottery industry. Until 1965 much of the area which is now Sandnes was a smaller municipality, neighbored by Høyland, Høle and parts of Hetland (Riska and Usken) municipalities, when they were merged to become one city.

The town of Sandnes is located about 15 km south of Stavanger, and these two cities have expanded so as to almost form a twin city. The municipality of Sola is located to the west, Klepp and Time to the south, and Gjesdal and Forsand to the east. The fjord Gandsfjorden is situated north-south and ends in the centre of Sandnes. The international airport of Stavanger is situated in Sola.
The landscape of the Stavanger and Sandnes region is quite inviting and flat. On the long west coast there are several beaches and further inland the land is raised to form low plains with some small peaks rising up to 400-500 meters above sea level. From Stavanger and Sandnes it is one hour by car to alpine and nordic skiing resorts. In Sandnes there are some easily accessible small mountain peaks with a splendid view in all directions. The renowned Lyse Fjord is also easily accessible by car or boat.

Sandnes hosts a large array of retail shops of most kinds and is used by the neighbouring municipalities appreciating the service and wide range of selections. Sandnes is known as Norway's bicycle city, mainly due to the fact that the bicycle manufacturer Øglænd DBS was situated here for decades. The town offers a variety of routes for everyday riders and tourists.
The town also holds a vibrant industry mainly in the Ganddal area in the south and the Lura and Forus area in the north towards the Stavanger boundary. It is a significant activity towards the oil exploration in the North Sea and also a large cluster of IT related companies. In this suburban region between Stavanger and Sandnes large malls and department stores have also been established. Among these malls is Norway's biggest mall, Kvadrat meaning "square", as when it was built it was a totally square bulding. On the outskirts of the town the internationally renowned, professional china manufacturer Figgjo is situated.
Unfortunately Sandnes does not have any history to brag about regarding sport. However, their best football team (Sandnes Ulf) is competing among the best in their league (Norwegian 2nd Division).
Sandnes is the only town in Norway that is a member of the World Health Organisation’s network of Healthy Cities.

Historically, Sandnes has been known as the pottery town of Norway due to the important ceramics industry in those days, based on the extensive occurrence of clay in the surroundings. During a period spanning approximately 20 years from the early eighties, until 2000, the city was also known as Sykkelbyen (Bicycle city), as it was the location of the only remaining Norwegian bicycle manufacturer, Den Beste Sykkel, or DBS for short.
