[edit] Description
The Sandridge Trail is a shared use path for cyclists and pedestrians, which follows an old rail line, now the 109 tram route. Consequently the trail is also known as the 109 tram trail, which is a misnomer since the tram goes to Box Hill, while the trail only goes to the CBD. The trail is located in the inner southern suburb of Port Melbourne in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.[1]
The trail is significant as it follows the path many new immigrants to Australia took when they first entered the country to begin a new life. See also Sandridge Bridge.
If arriving from Tasmania on the Spirit of Tasmania, this trail is an easy way into town.
As of 2007, the Melbourne Convention Centre area is being developed further.[2] The development is to maintain a link between the Sandridge Trail and Capital City Trail.
[edit] Following the Path
At Jeff's shed leave the Capital City Trail by the Yarra River and head south down Claredon St to where the Restaurant Trams start their run at Normandy Rd. The off road trail starts here and heads west along Normandy Rd soon arriving at the tram corral.
Watch out for wayward trams as you go pass the tram corral. After that, it's clear sailing all the way to the bay on a treed path. Have some fish 'n' chips, look at Station Pier and take the dog to the dog restaurant.
[edit] Connections
Bayside Trail in the west, close to Rex Hunt's fish 'n' chip shop. Heading north leads to West Gate Bridge and the Yarra River punt. Heading south leads to St Kilda. Capital City Trail in the east delivers Melbourne city centre.
