Sandtown
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sandtown is a predominantly African-American neighborhood located southwest of Atlanta, Georgia. It is one of the Atlanta area's most affluent African American communties with the majority of the population belonging to the middle and upper middle class. Public schools in the area continue to decline despite the area's overall affluence. This is due largely to the ability of parents to bus their kids to superior North Fulton Schools and the fact that many affluent Black families in the area opt for private schools, namely Woodward Academy in College Park.
Sandtown and Buzzard's Roost were the two largest Indian villages in the area where Atlanta would develop. After the Trail of Tears and the government of Georgia divided the territory into counties, Sandtown ended up in Campbell (which was absorbed into Fulton in 1932 along with Milton).
The road now known as Cascade was originally an Indian trail known as the Sandtown Road and ran from the village on the Chattahoochee River near Utoy Creek east to through what became Five Points then to the vicinity of Decatur.
The neighborhood is served by State Routes 6, 154 and 166.
