Talk:San Jose, Illinois
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Why is it pronounced this way?
From what I can tell, since according to this article, 99.8% of the residents are white and from back east, perhaps they just don't know how to pronounce Spanish place names properly.
This article doesn't tell the story behind the name. What's a town in Illinois doing with a Spanish place name??? How did a town in Illinois get the name "San Jose"??? Why aren't they confused with SAn Jose, California or San Jose, Costa Rica?
Some time ago, I received a part from Apple Computer, a California company, and San Jose was misspelled on the envelope!!!! We are talking San Jose, California here. This is a place name employees of Apple Computer should know how to spell correctly!!!
- The story of how San Jose, IL got its name is written up somewhere. Maybe it was Bill Bryson's Made in America, or I might be misremembering. Another local city with a counter-intuitive pronunciation would be Cairo, IL. Considering that San Jose, IL; San Jose, CA; and San Jose, Costa Rica are all pronounced differently, there might be no confusion. As for Apple Computer, they're based in Cupertino, CA. But I don't think their parts come from there. They wouldn't be so savvy in other parts of the world, where Apple parts would be supplied from.
