Savabeel

Savabeel was a successful New Zealand bred racehorse racing in Australia during the mid 2000s. In Spring 2004 he won the race considered the Weight for Age Championship of Australasia, the Cox Plate. He also won the Spring Champion Stakes at Group One level.
Disappointingly, after an excellent run in the C F Orr Stakes in February 2005, Savabeel was unplaced in his three remaining starts. In May 2005 the decision was made to retire the horse to stud.
A son of champion New Zealand sire Zabeel, Savabeel was trained by Graeme Rogerson, and ridden by Chris Munce in his two Group One wins.
Savabeel is a brown colt foaled on 23 September 2001 in New Zealand.
He is by the champion NZ Sire Zabeel, out of multiple Group 1 winner Savannah Success.
In 2004 his claim to fame came when he dashed to the lead and won the $3 million Cox Plate over 2040 metres at Moonee Valley. He was the first 3YO to win the race since another son of Zabeel, Octagonal won the race nine years earlier in 1995.
He retired to stud in 2005, after an unsuccessful autumn campaign which saw him only place the once. All in all, he retired the winner of $2,760,460 in stakes. Savabeel started on 13 occasions, for 3 wins and 4 placings. He was trained by Graeme Rogerson and wore that stables famous red, royal blue sleeves, and green armbands.
He now stands at Waikato Stud as one of the primary stallions.
