[edit] General
Savnnas Preserve State Park is predominantly a Savannah; grasslands speckled with intermitent trees. The park is made up of pine flat-woods, marsh, savannah, and the atlantic ridge. Protecting southeast Florida's largest freshwater marsh, the Savannas Preserve State Park ecncompasses 6,500 acres. Savannas is home to many species, most notably: the protected Florida Scrub-Jay, the endangered Gopher Tortoise, the Florida Aligator, and the Sand-Hill Crane. With nearly 13 miles of public trails, Savannas is a great hike. The birding there is magnificent, and the newely built Education Center is a great tool for families and schools alike. Inside the Education Center there are many live exhibits, a gift shop, self guided tour booklets, and information on many of Florida's State Parks. Interpretive guided tours and canoe/kayak trips are great programs that the Friends of Savannas Preserve State Park (a volunteer nonprofit) offers. Fishing is allowed, there is an equestrian entrance, biking is permitted (although difficult because of the sand), and Savannas makes for a great jogging route.
