Sawtell, New South Wales

Sawtell is a coastal Suburb of Coffs Harbour in northern New South Wales, Australia in the City of Coffs Harbour. It is named after Mr. O. C. Sawtell. and 546km north of Sydney it has become increasingly popular amongst holiday goers due to its small population, many restaurants and proximity to beaches. The main street of Sawtell has become increasingly well known for its restaurants and its heritage listed cinema.
The town is located close to Toormina and Boambee, two areas of similar population a few kilometres west inland. It is located on the North Coast railway line and is served by 3 XPT services daily.
Australian Idol finalist Brett Cruickshank is from Sawtell.
NASA astronaut Ross Robertson was born in Sawtell.

A number of annual events have been organised by the local chamber of commerce. The Chilli Festival includes many varied activities such as wine tasting, 'hot' desserts and a number of vendors both local and national serving assorted chilli based dishes. Each year a chilli recipe book is produced.
An annual new years 'Fun Day' is conducted primarily aimed at family entertainment. Wood chopping, a fun run, tug of war competitions and live entertainment are the norm.
The Annual Ben Woods Cricket Tournament is also held between Sawtell and Coffs Harbour and takes places during the Christmas Period. Fans of the game come to watch the rivallary between the two opposing post codes of Sawtell-2452 and Coffs Harbour-2450. The game has been going for two years and both events have been held at the Toormina Fields, with Coffs Harbour winning the 2004 game and Sawtell narrowly defeating Coffs in the 2005 spectacle.
Every year (since 1999) around the months of September and October the annual Barney Miller Classic is held, the classic is a surfing competition held to raise money for those living with spinal injuries. Surfers from all over NSW and Queensland come to compete in the event. Controversy was caused in 2004 when local surfing legend Toby Webber was knocked out in his first heat, but he paid to enter the competition a second time and went on to take the 2004 title.
Close by to the Suburbs of Sawtell is Boambee East, a small district in 2452 postcode and the ghetto town of Toormina, also in 2452.
