Schloss Ort (or Schloss Orth) is an Austrian castle situated in the Traunsee lake, near Gmunden and 19 km from Vöcklabruck, the gate to Salzkammergut.

It was founded around the year 1080 by Hartnidus of Ort, and improvements continued to be made by his descendants until 1244 by his descendant, Hartnidus V. They were government officers in Steiermark.
In 1244 the youngest sister Gisela of Ort was the owner. She was engaged to Albero of Velsperg. They moved to the Herren of Winkel.
In 1344 the brothers Friedrich and Reinprecht I of Wallsee purchased the castle.
January 25, 1350 Friedrich of Wallsee got the castle.
1355 The sons Friedrich, Wolfgang and Heinrich of Wallsee inherited from him.
1361 Heinrich von Wallsee became the single owner of the castle on August 3, 1361. He made an agreement that afterwards his youngest brother Reinprecht of Wallsee would replace him.
1422 After the death of Reinprecht of Wallsee, his son Reinprecht II of Wallsee was the owner.
1450 At the death Reinprecht II of Wallsee, the ownership went to Reinprecht II of Wallsee, his second son.
1483 After the death of Reinprecht IV of Wallsee, the descendants of Wallsee had no more power, therefore Emperor Friedrich III took over the castle Schloss Ort.
1484 Gotthard von Starhenberg, the Governor of Upper Austria, was the ruler until 1491.
1492 Bernhard of Starhenberg and later his descendants were the rulers until 1584.
1588 Weikhard Freiherr of Pollheim bought the castle.
1595 He sold the castle on April 6, 1595 to the LANDESFÜRSTLICHE CITY GMUNDEN.
1603 They sold to Emperor Rudolf II on April 21. Salzamtmann Veit Spindler took care the castle.
1625 Graf Herberstorff, who was the Governor of Bavarian, city Enns, desired to be the owner.

Emperor gave some terms of purchase as following:

1. Fish supply obligations;
2. Provide hunting places in all forests for the Emperor;
3. Emperor allowed to use all woodlands which belonged to the castle;
4. Advance sale rights to the Emperor.

1629 His widow Maria Salome Gräfin Herberstorff inherited from him.
1634 On May 11 she sold to her son-in-law .
1648 The property fell to her son Johann Wahrmund of Preising.
1658 May 1, Baron Georg Sigmund of Salburg bought it.
1662 Leaves the property in his will from 24 February 1662 to his two sons Gottard Heinrich and Count Franz Ferdinand of Salzburg.
1689 Emperor Leopold I ruled.
1868 Half of the lake until is part of Toscana, Italy, ruled by Grand Duke Leopold II.
1876 Grand Duke Johann Nepomuk Salvator acquired the castle at Gmunden.
1878 Design remains unchanged until today. October 6, 1889 Johann renounces the Habsburg family. Upon withdrawal from the Habsburg imperial house he changes his name to Johann Orth. In December he married Milli Stubel.
1890 Johann Orth departed to South America with his own ship, the "St. Margaret". On 12 July came last message from Johann Orth before his departure to Valparaiso.
1914 Based on April 1 purchasing contract, Emperor Franz Jugendheimstiftung allowed students of Gmunden's schools to visit the castle, but World War I broke his plan .
1915 February 18, Grand Duke Johann Orth got the rights back, therefore the rights came back to the country.
1919 until 1973 Inflation because of war, there was a lack of money for the castle.
At present the castle is being used for study centre of the Federal Ministry for Land and Forestry (Bundesministeriums für Land- und Forstwirtschaft).
1995 January 5, the castle belongs to city Gmunden.
1996 Began the production TV series "Schlosshotel Orth"
