Schwibbogen
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Schwibbogen is a decorative candle-holder from the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) region in Saxony, Germany. It is typically a wooden half arch that depicts historical or religious scenes, and is often used in local Christmas traditions. The origins of the arch are supposedly rooted in the local mining culture, when miners would put the Schwibbogen at the mouth of caves during the dark winter months. The town of Seiffen is particularly noted for its production of Schwibbogen.
The first metal Schwibbogen was made in Johanngeorgenstadt around 1740.
