Screaming (music)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Screaming is a form of singing, found particularly in the musical genres of metal, hardcore punk, and their subgenres. Screaming is usually growled and demanding in metal, while it tends to be more fast-paced or vulnerable in hardcore. Screamo is often mistaken as a generic term for music with screaming, though it actually refers to a specific emo subgenre.
[edit] Types of screaming
- Growl, screech, grunt – Forms of screaming mostly associated with heavier metal genres. They sound low, and almost like a dog barking.
- Yell – Mostly associated with hardcore and punk rock vocals that are yelled at a frentic rate.
- Shout – Can refer to the aforementioned punk vocals, but also used to define screamed raps attributal to Limp Bizkit, Rage Against the Machine and Slipknot.
- Metal screaming – typically performed in demanding roars.
- Hardcore screaming – more frenzied and fast-paced, hardcore screaming is similar to punk yelling but is distinctly screamed.
- Death metal vocals – Growled, screeched and grunted, death metal vocals are dark and bombastic.
- Metalcore screaming – roaring and ballistic, similar to both metal and hardcore but generally more blistering than both. Similar to thrash metal and thrashcore.
- Post-hardcore screaming – dark, shrill, and with a vulnerable undertone. Much more high-pitched than metal screaming. Pioneered by people such as Daryl Palumbo
- Nu metal screaming – ranges from the sung-screamed techniques of post-grunge to shouted raps, even taking a thrash turn in some cases.
- Inward Screaming (pig squeals) – Invented by the Death Metal band Vehemence, inward screaming is used in newer, mostly underground Death Metal. Often used as a filler or background noise in un-vocalised parts. Done by manipulating the false vocal chords and breathing in harshly. This form does take some bit of technique.
- Scream/Sing - Where a screamer, screams while another vocalist sings normally(most of the time the screaming is quieter) Some bands that use this scream are Boys Night Out and From First to Last.
- High Pitch - Found mostly in Black Metal is just like most other screaming, just high and very demanding sounding. More strenuous than death metal vocals, this type of screaming is by most standards quite unnerving to most listeners.
