Seagull Book & Tape
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Seagull Book & Tape is an Latter-Day Saints-oriented bookstore, with over two dozen stores located throughout the states of Utah, Idaho, Arizona, California, and once, even Texas (Dallas). The chain is based in American Fork, Utah, USA, and is the largest competitor to Deseret Book in the LDS book market. It is a sister company of Covenant Communications, Inc. which is one of the largest publishers of LDS-themed inspirational fiction and nonfiction.
In July 2006, Deseret Book decided that their wholesale division would no longer sell to Seagull because of "a difference of opinion about how we [Deseret Book] were treated from a merchandising standpoint" (although speculation as to the stimulus for the decision varies).
On December 28th, 2006, Deseret Book announced that it had completed the purchase of both Seagull and its sister company, Covenant Communications, Inc., creating a chain of 69 stores. The announcement indicated that the Seagull Book stores will continue to be operated as a separate chain, maintaining its position of selling books at a discount relative to Deseret Book.
