The land of Virginia was granted to Sir Thomas Gates, Sir George Somers and others, for a speedy process of plantation. The people that signed the charter split into two colonies; One consisting of divers, Knights, gentlemen, merchants and others in the city of London, called the First Colony; and the other of Knights, gentlemen and others of the cities of Bristol, Exeter, the town of Plymouth, and other places, called the Second Colony.
Among the signatories is John Smith of Jamestown.
