- The Milice (Vichy France's secret police) was run by a secretary general.
- Hezbollah is run by a secretary-general.
- In the Civil service of the Republic of Ireland, the highest civil servant in a government department is known as a Secretary-General. See also Permanent Secretary.
- In the Netherlands, the highest ranking civil servant of each ministry is also known as a Secretary-Genral (Secretaris Generaal)
- University of Santo Tomas, the General Secretary of the University is known as the Secretary General
