Seiko Higa

Karate-do Master Seiko HIGA (1889-1966) was one of the best disciples of Master Kanryo HIGASHIONNA. Altogether with Chojun MIYAGI helped to keep and spread the tradition of the Naha-Te (latter renamed Goju-Ryu) taught by his master. He was also a dedicated disciple regarding the tradition, philosophy and inner development knowledge of his master. Among his students there are Kanki IZUMIGAWA, Seiichi AKAMINE (creator of the Ken-Shin-Kan), Seikichi TOGUCHI (creator of the Shoreikan) and (his son) Seikichi HIGA who carried on his father's Dojo in Okinawa.
Chojun Miyagi is, perhaps, the most famous disciple of Master Higashionna, and since he is the official creator of the now wide practised Goju-Ryu Karate-do, he is remembered and honoured. However, Seiko Higa was so important that Miyagi himself give him credit in his text “Karate-do Gairyaku” (1936). Higa was, also, vice-president and president of some societies to promote Karate and specially Goju-ryu, in Okinawa, like the “Goju-Ryu Shinkokai”, since 1952.
