Seodaemun-gu is a gu located in northwestern Seoul, South Korea. Seodaemun-gu incorporates residential and historical areas. It is home to several prominent universities, including Yonsei and Ewha, Bongwon Temple and the notorious Seodaemun Prison. The district covers 17.6 square kilometers, approximately 2.9% of the total area of Seoul. The area derives its name from one of the four great gates in the wall surrounding the Joseon capital city of Hanyang. In Korean, Seodaemun literally means "Great West Gate".
