Sergio Pinheiro Lopes

Sergio Pinheiro Lopes is a Brazilian writer, translator, poet and lyricist. He was born in São Paulo, state of São Paulo, on March 26, 1953. He is the son of the juristprudent Mauro Brandão Lopes, author of several books about his field of expertise, and Maria Júlia Pinheiro Lopes. He is a descendant of Brás Cubas, the founder of the city of Santos and twice Governor of the Captaincy of São Vicente. He is a grandson of the writer Julio Cézar Ribeiro Vaugham or Julio Ribeiro, as he signed, author of the renowned romance A Carne (The Flesh) and the creator of the flag of the state of São Paulo. He is also a nephew of the writers Orígenes Lessa, Elsie Lessa and Ivan Pedro de Martins, a cousin of Cornélio Pires and first cousin of the journalist and writer Ivan Lessa.
He published two books: Cabe Outra Vida na Vida, which is a bilingual edition in Portuguese and English, Olavobrás, 2003, and Fogo Paulista, Olavobrás, 2004. The first book was introduced by Ivan Lessa and prefaced by Paulo Bomfim, and the second by André Nigri and Raul Fiker. He writes for the magazine Salada Paulista. He has written the lyrics for around fifty songs, in partnership with Claudio Carina, Carlos Takaoka and Daniel Schafram. One of the first songs, "Documentário" (Documentary), was fourth in the Music Festival of 1981 in TV Cultura and later recorded several times. Lopes is also a translator and works mainly with Portuguese and English for the advertising and the communications industries. He has translated into English a book about public education in Brazil sponsored, among others, by UNICEF.
