Shalheveth Freier

Freier was born in Germany 1920 and died in Israel 1994.
He fled Germany and served with the British Army during World War II. He served in Africa and participated in the liberation of Italy. He was involved with smuggling Jewish refugees from Europe to Palestine 1943-46.
Freier served Israel in numerous capacities including working in the Haganah. He was science attache in Paris 1956-60. Directors-General of the Israel Atomic Energy Commission 1971-76. He also completed two terms as manager of Soreq Nuclear Research Center, first in 1970 and again in 1981. He served as the head of the IAEC's policy team from 1981 until his death.
He chaired the Israeli group of Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs and served on the Pugawash Council.
