Shawlands Academy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shawlands Academy is a non-denominational Secondary school on the southside of Glasgow, Scotland. It has a roll of approx 1,700 pupils and 90 teachers.
In the 1960s, Shawlands had a particularly high concentration of Jewish pupils, and was consequently one of the few state schools in Scotland to offer Hebrew as a curriculum subject. Today its multi-cultural character is striking. According to a survey in 2006, over 57 languages are spoken in the playground.[1]
Its most famous alumnus is Ian Brady who carried out the Moors Murders with Myra Hindley in the 1960s.[2] Also musician John Martyn and actor Alex Norton are two well known Shawlands FPs.
