Sherwan

Sherwan is a union council of the Abbottabad district, Pakistan, and is 35km from the city of Abbottabad. It has a population of more than 10,000. The local language is Hindko while Urdu is understood universally. The main ethnic groups, called castes or families, are the Tanolis and the Awans.

Sherwan is located in a valley which is surrounded by large, forested mountains on three sides. These forests host a number of wild animals, such as jackals, wolves, pigs, porcupines and occasionally tigers. Sherwan is divided into two parts sherwan Khurd (small) and Sherwan kalan (wide). Sherwan Kalan is expanded on a large area as compared to Sherwan Khurd. In the North/East of Sherwan there is anther town called Patheel. As being part of the same valley Patheel is also very beautiful. Other than being beautiful it is also very famous because in Patheel, were born some of the most powerful men in the era. One of those respectable personalities is former provincial minister late Ayub Khan Tanoli. Mr. Ayub was the first person to be called the most powerful in the Abbottabad district. He earned his high school degree from Governament High School Sherwan and than moved to Abbottabad for higher education (university details not available). He was a lawyer and a Provincial Minister. When he became a Minister he did lot of things for the development of his region. He build roads so that people can travel with comfort. It was because of Ayub that Sherwan and Patheel got their Phone Service. On the south of the valley there is a stream called River Mangal, home to a number of fish such as Trout, salmons (Maley), Eels and soles etc. Locals grow seasonal crops such as Maize (maki) and wheat (kanak). By having plenty of water and soil rich with nutrients some people thought of the idea of growing fruit trees such as cherry, orange, apple, plum and appricote. The idea was a success, because farmers were able to produce enough fruit for themselves and also for the people they shared with, but they weren't able to produce as much to sell in the market. Despite of its beauty the Sherwan valley cannot support the needs of increasing population. People are moving to cities in search of jobs becaue the valley can't provide enough living facilities and food supply for people. So most of the people have moved to cities such as Karachi, Abbottabad, and Islamabad (Capital of Pakistan)for survival and in search of better living.
