Talk:Sheikh Mansur
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The article is partly incorrect. "A legend holds that Mansur was actually an Italian monk". In all Chechen legends, he is always considered as of Chechen origin. And only among some academics, there was a such a suspicion.
"Having been trained in Daghestan under strict Islamic law, he returned to the land of the Noxche". According to the legend he, one day was visited by two unknown persons, who called him to bring Islam in the Chechen Lands. After that he spent 3 days, alone, away from people, ?in the woods? (not sure about that) studying Quran. "He ordered the Noxche to stop practicing many of their old pagan traditions with the cult of the dead, to stop smoking tobacco, to replace the customary laws (adats) with Islamic law (shariat) and to attempt Islamic unity." He didn't order, he could not. He had neither power nor respect/reputation at that time. He started preaching and calling people to Islam, and impressed by his example, people started following him. Nevertheless, he had to launch a campaing against the certain pagan mountain clans, notably "Gunoy", to force them convert to Islam. Some unhappy with the requirement to give up pork, moved to the cossack settlements on Terek.
