Shirakawa, Gifu (village)

Shirakawa (白川村; -mura) is a small, traditional village showcasing a style of buildings called gasshō-zukuri, located in Gifu, Japan.
As of April 1, 2004 the village has an estimated population of 1,933 and a density of 5.4 persons per km². The total area is 356.55 km².
The village is located near Takayama City, in Gifu. Together with Gokayama in Nanto, Toyama, it is one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites.
This town was used as the setting for the anime series, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni under the name 'Hinamizawa'.
