I wouldn't classify that as a reliable source as it is not from any episodes/films and therefore not apart of the story (in other words non-canon per the copyright holder) - and so I've added {{Disputeabout}} thanks/Fenton, Matthew Lexic Dark 52278 Alpha 771 13:40, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

- How so? The copyright holder has expressly stated that outside the films/episode, etcetera, that material like the encyclopaedia is not canon, which is unverifiable as they have plainly denied its credibility, for us to introduce this as a source makes the article OR. thanks/Fenton, Matthew Lexic Dark 52278 Alpha 771 13:45, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- The Encyclopedia is a reliable source for summarising episodes. It is not in itself, canon, but it does not speculate on things much. Building an article about fictional places without using any secondary sources is a bad idea: and by their very nature secondary sources are not part of the fictional work. You seem to entirely misunderstand Wikipedia's aims and workings. The fact is, the Encyclopedia contains pictures of the plaques which were on those ships. Morwen - Talk 13:48, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

- (edit confliction): I'm not saying we should purge this sort of information but I do believe we should add some distinction between "non-canon and canon" - as within the "Star Trek universe" content like "This shipyard houses the Yoyodyne shipbuilding division" has not been stated, to me it would be more appropriately stated "the Star Trek Encyclopaedia states that the shipyard houses the Yoyodyne shipbuilding division" - that to me avoids declaring it apart of the copyrighted "story" and avoids the confusion that it is stated in any episode. thanks/Fenton, Matthew Lexic Dark 52278 Alpha 771 13:55, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

- Thing is, there are conflicts in material seen on screen : what is Troi's father's name for example? I'd give both versions, noting where they both came from, and finding a citation for Okuda saying the "Conundrum" version was a mistake, if we can. Was Picard bald when he was a cadet? But it's all as fictional as everything, so writing in-universe material for "canon" stuff, whatever that is today, and out-of-universe material for non-canon stuff just seems weird to me. [edit] Defiants!
Two things
- "In A Mirror, Darkly" apparently contains a very good view of the USS Defiant's plaque, declaring it to be a "Constitution class" ship built at "Tranquility Base" (screencap is here)
- The other Defiant's plaque claims it was built at "Antares Ship Yards", which on the face of it disagrees with dialogue in "The Search". We probably should present the dialogue in "The Search" (which I think was quite suggestive) and also the claim about the plaque in the Encyclopedia. Morwen - Talk 14:05, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
