[edit] Biography
It was the day before Thanksgiving 2001 when Alex Aro, Matt Feugill and Jimmy Lantagne formed the band in Haverhill, Massachusetts.[1] After compiling a list of names, the band had narrowed it down to either Shot Down Sun or Half The Earth. After calling up dozens of friends to voice their opinions, the name Shot Down Sun was made official. The band played its first two shows without a drummer, on in Feugill's basement on December 8 and the next on January 4, 2002 at The Sad Cafe. However, the band quickly found Eric Beaubien and things started rolling from there.[citation needed]
Over the course of 2002 the band gained a fanbase playing as many shows as they could and regularly performing at The Sad Cafe. In April 2002 the band added Jack Cuneo as their second guitarist, but he was quickly dropped from the line-up due to artistic differences. In August 2002 the band opened the annual Post Pig Roast and by that time had played with some of the biggest names in the area including: Blind By Noon, Deadfriend, Gargantua Soul and many more. In December 2002, after a few upsetting shows and built up tensions, the band almost called it quits.[citation needed]
2003 came and the band prevailed and continued playing shows. In June 2003 the band entered Crossout Studios to record their first studio EP, titled the Malevolence EP. The EP sold well at shows, but the band was maturing and the EP was a poor example of what direction the band was headed. In October 2003 the band was featured as the opening act at The Rockpile, a venue hosted by radio station WAAF along acts like Dogfight and Drinkfist. As 2003 came to a close, the band scrapped all their older material to make room for the new Shot Down Sun that was to come.[citation needed]
The band quickly changed direction at the outset of 2004, playing music influenced more by bands like Unearth and Poison The Well rather than Sevendust and Deftones. In April 2004 the band entered Son of the Seventh Studios in Haverhill, Massachusetts to record the Seven EP. It was at this point the band became stars among the locals.[3] Over the summer the band added Scott Ferguson to their line-up and with him recorded Portrait of a Bleeding Memory also at Son of the Seventh Studios in September. Ferguson was dropped from the line-up in March 2005 due to conflicts with other band members and was replaced by Ben Gostanian. Gostanian brought a whole new flavor to the band and took the music to a new level.[citation needed]
In September 2005, Lantagne left to attend school and was quickly replaced by Myles Kimball. In March 2006,[3] the band signed with Inner Evil Entertainment records,[1] and began recording their full length with Vital Studios, titled The Human Design. The band resigned from Inner Evil Entertainment and self released the album in July 2006.[3] In August Shot Down Sun was signed with Crash Music and in September Gostanian left the band and was replaced by Maxwell Lee. The Human Design was re-released through the label on January 23, 2007.[citation needed]
[edit] Influences
The band members state some of their main influences include As I Lay Dying, A Life Once Lost, Opeth and The Agony Scene,[1] All Shall Perish, The Faceless, Through The Eyes Of The Dead, Job For A Cowboy, and Mortal Treason.[3]
