Shotts

Shotts is a town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. As of the 2001 census, the population was 8,235. [1] It was reputedly named after the legendary giant "Bertram de Shotts".
Shotts was known for its mining. In the 1960s there were 22 coal mines in Shotts, but all are now closed. Today, Shotts has a railway station on the Shotts Line, between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh Waverley and is one mile from the M8 motorway halfway between Glasgow and Edinburgh, so it is popular as a dormitory town.
The nearest major airport to Shotts is at Edinburgh, 24mi/38km away.
Shotts is the home of the world champion pipe band, the House of Edgar Shotts and Dykehead Pipe Band.
Shotts also boasts a large Catholic community and is part of the Motherwell diocese. In 2005 St Patrick's Shotts Parish [2]celebrated the centenary of the opening of the present church building. The parish roots its self go back further to 1868, when a largely Irish Catholic immigrant population swelled the then very small Shotts Catholic community. Shotts St Patrick's Opera Group and St Patrick's Brass Band regularly entertain locals.
