Cooperative Member Listing

Hello all, I have a list of all the members of the ShopRite cooperative. However as several may know some companies go by different names. For example Food Parade is listed as Greenfield on my list. It would be of help if the person who made the current coop list could let me know what stores are using there d/b/a name. My list of coop members is on the Wakefern page right now. Some stores on my list are on my information, other stores are not. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Chairmanfrank (talkcontribs) 06:18, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Merger

I think that a finished encyclopedia article on ShopRite would be indistinguishable from one on Wakefern Food Corporation so I propose that the two be merged, which would reduce work, and mean that more eyeballs would see Chairmanfrank's new list of members. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 13:50, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

I agree, however the main problem is the coop listing, both lists have some conflicting details on them. I would disagree with a merger until that can be sorted out. -Chairman Frank 08:01, 8 November 2006
What is your source; how recent is it? --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 09:19, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
My information is from "The Source" (an internal publication) released in September. My list is from a chart and I realize some names may be abbreviated. I compared my list to the list on the ShopRite page and found that around 5-7 companies appeard on my list but not the other list. However I fell if I add them in then there may be some duplicates. My list has Food Parade listed as Greenfield. So I worry some other chains may have different names. -Chairmanfrank

Since your list has a source, and the one in the article does not, I recommend that you are bold and delete the current list, replacing it with yours. Internal magazines are not ideal sources, but when it comes to facts about an enterprise itself, they are acceptable. Don't forget to cite your source in a footnote. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 12:01, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
Good idea, I will delete all members on the ShopRite list that do not appear on the Wakefern list. I will try and retain store locations where possible but some members will not have their locations filled in. Hopefully someone can find the proper information. I'll try and work on it later tonight (eastern time). Chairmanfrank 17:24, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
Please note that the 2 lists are NOT the same, and this is why the 2 pages should NOT be merged. The structure of the cooperative and the members of the cooperative are NOT the same as the companies which are shown on the ShopRite page. For instance, the COMPANY Nutley ShopRite owns and operates the ShopRite of Nutley, NJ (ShopRite Page)...but the actual members of the coop are seen in the Wakefern list as "Infusino C" & "Infusino T"...the same goes for ShopRite of Brookdale in BLoomfield, NJ--the store's operating company is called Brookdale ShopRite Inc., but it is owned by "Drust", which is the last name of Mrs. Drust. Merging the 2 seems to oversimplify the nature of the Wakefern cooperative and retailer's cooperatives in general. In addition, it seems that the list of companies on the ShopRite page is taken from the "Marketing Guidebook" which is a publication from the industry group called Trade Dimensions. In reply to 151.198.153.62: if the two lists cannot be merged, I believe that for clarity they should appear in the same article. Can I suggest that a useful way to retain the same level of detail would be to have a table with multiple columns, including one for the name of the legal entity that is a co-op member, and another column for the "doing business as" name, where that applies? Thanks for identifying the source–that is very useful. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 12:24, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

I oppose the suggested merger. While Wakefern and ShopRite are closely related, they aren't one and the same entity. For example, the former owns and operates a separate chain called PriceRite. As explained in that article, it also distributes PriceRite-branded products to other stores. —David Levy 19:05, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

I concur with those opposed to the merger and I oppose even a merging of the lists since they are fundamentally different--one lists members of the Wakefern cooperative and the other lists ShopRite Supermarket operating companies. Presumably, one or more member(s) of Wakefern do not operate ShopRite stores and instead operate PriceRite outlets. It also follows that these PriceRite-operating members, who appear in the Wakefern list, would have no corresponding entry in the ShopRite list. In the absense of a complete list of members and the stores which each operate (which is almost impossible to obtain since ShopRite/Wakefern/PriceRite are NOTORIOUSLY secretive organizations)...I think the 2 separate lists suffice. Perhaps a third list would even be a good idea on the PriceRite page, listing the operating companies of PriceRite stores and which companies run which stores.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 12.20.14.2 (talkcontribs) 21:37, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
ShopRite, Wakefern and PriceRite are certainly different topics, but that doesn't mean all three should have separate articles here. The benefit of a merged article would be a comprehensive article that covered the co-op, its members, its businesses, and its history, and could explain fully the relationshop between the co-op, the brands, and other entities. Wakefern is far less complicated than Coca-Cola, which is an intricate web of brands, bottlers and joint ventures, yet all the key facts are in one encyclopedia article.
I am surprised by 12.20.14.2's comment about PriceRite, because the information that we have so far is that PriceRite stores are owned and operated by the co-op itself. --Hroðulf (or Hrothulf) (Talk) 22:57, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
Note that our article for the Coca-Cola Company contains links to other articles about the company's various brands (including the one that you typed above). Likewise, ShopRite and PriceRite are brands of Wakefern. ShopRite is a much more recognizable name than Wakefern is, but it's illogical to merge the Wakefern article (which contains information unrelated to ShopRite) into the ShopRite article. If anything, the opposite would make more sense, but I don't advocate that either. We have enough distinct material on Wakefern, ShopRite and PriceRite to sustain three separate articles (which are easily accessible via one another). —David Levy 23:22, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
